Resistance and Flow
A series of dye works began in 2013. These initially responded to ideas of a repeated action, an enfolding in which the forms and the figuration were created by exposure and concealment. Each work is a moment in time, evidence of the duration of its making.
Now this series has developed to use only plant dyes to explore and respond to the inherent possibilities of each dye plant I work with. Each work produced carries the colour and essence of the plant as well as the atmospheric conditions of present in the dyeing process.
My thinking about these works has developed as a meditation on the implication of resistance, the potential for spontaneous expression in response to constrictions imposed and the contingent movement of fluid through and around fibrous material.
